Lessons from Nanna Niecey

My 4-year-old niece, Deanna (Side note: I actually call her Nanna Niecey or Niecey Nanna) knows how to brighten her T.T. Juan’s day! I initially recorded this video of my niece for fun about a month ago, because she LOVES this song “If Only” by Dove Cameron. This morning as I re-watched it, I actually listened to the lyrics.  This song is not only beautiful but hit the nail directly on the head. Life can be so confusing at times and knowing which path in life to take can be stressful.   My motto is “Define Your Life Before Life Defines You” and this song is why it’s so important to do just that.

Nanna Niecey sings this song with so much PASSION that it makes me wonder if she’s singing from experience! Hmmm….

I know I can relate with the first verse (all of the other verse’s as well) in Dove’s song:

A million thoughts in my head
Should I let my heart keep listening?
‘Cause up ’til now I’ve walked the line
Nothing lost but something missing

I can’t decide
What’s wrong, what’s right
Which way should I go?

Many times, I’ve found myself in this very place, where life is so chaotic, and there is so much noise surrounding me that I didn’t know which path to take or which way to go.  I have walked that very line of confusion and I have felt that lonely feeling of not being able to identify what is missing in my life, and knowing that there was a void and attempting to fill it with all of the wrong things.

I have found that the key to “Defining Your Life” is using your past experiences and life-defining moments as life lessons and stepping stones to discovering and fulfilling your purpose and creating the life you have only imagined.

Reflecting on your life experiences is one of the best ways to explore and develop a sense of self-awareness.  Using self-reflection as a learning tool can help you make the most of your experiences by helping you to gain a greater understanding of yourself and the world around you.  Reflection gives you an opportunity to silence the chaos and noise surrounding you, dig deep within, and begin to untangle and sort through the many experiences that have brought you to this present moment in time.

When reflection is coupled with the evaluation of your experiences, it often creates meaning.   When you are able to identify the meaning and purpose hidden within your experiences, they become life lessons that can be used to help you grow, develop, and gain understanding and clarity about your life story.   Your life story becomes your message to the world, helping you to discover and fulfill your God-given purpose.

A million thoughts in my head
Should I let my heart keep listening?
‘Cause up ’til now I’ve walked the line
Nothing lost but something missing

I can’t decide
What’s wrong, what’s right
Which way should I go?

If only I knew what my heart was telling me
Don’t know what I’m feeling
Is this just a dream?
Ah oh, yeah
If only I could read the signs in front of me
I could find the way to who I’m meant to be
Ah oh, if only
If only [2x]

Every step, every word
With every hour I am falling in
To something new, something brave
To someone I—I have never been

I can’t decide
What’s wrong, what’s right
Which way should I go?

If only I knew what my heart was telling me
Don’t know what I’m feeling
Is this just a dream?
Ah oh, yeah
If only I could read the signs in front of me
I could find the way to who I’m meant to be
Ah oh, if only
Yeah

Am I crazy? Maybe we could happen
Yeah
Will you still be with me when the magic’s all run out?

If only I knew what my heart was telling me
Don’t know what I’m feeling
Is this just a dream?
Ah oh…
If only I could read the signs in front of me
I could find the way to who I’m meant to be
Ah oh…

If only, yeah [3x]

If only [3x]
