Holding on to Old Stuff

HAPPY OLD STUFF DAY!

Today, March 2nd is “National Old Stuff Day.” Old Stuff Day is a day to get rid of the old and welcome the new.  Just a few months ago, at the start of the New Year, many people quoted, “Out with the old, in with the new.” Well, we are three months into the year and I wonder how much of the “old” they have let go. In honor of today, I would like to offer 3 ways that you can celebrate this day.

3 THINGS YOU SHOULD GET RID OF TO START DECLUTTERING YOUR LIFE

 #1:  CELL PHONE Purge

Are you holding on to old text messages from past loves, phone numbers of people who have passed away, or the 1,342 selfies that you took before you captured that perfect one? Well, it’s time to purge and get rid of it, TODAY.  I have been guilty of this a time or two, and some I am currently guilty of. So in honor of today, DELETE, is the keyword! I promise you will thank me the next time you attempt to take a picture and you don’t see an alert that reads, “Storage Full.”

#2:  BAD HABITS DIE HARD

We are all creatures of habit and anything that you do repeatedly, good, bad or indifferent, will eventually become a habit. John Dryden said it best, “We first make our habits and then our habits make us.” Whether your habits make your life easier or harder than it has to be, the good thing is that you can decide what you allow to become a habit in your life.  Make a list of your bad habits and then make a list of positive habits that you could replace the bad ones with.  Take it from me. Habits are easy to start, but difficult to break.  Bad habits really do die hard!

#3:  GET RID OF THE OLD STUFF

Let’s keep it real. It’s not just the material “stuff” that you are holding on to, it’s the emotional baggage and unfinished business that has you stuck as well.  We often hang on to far more things than we need and instead of them motivating us, they began to overwhelm and control us. Whether you realize it or not, the stuff that you are holding on to that can be seen on the outside, is often a result of the stuff you are holding on to on the inside.  What’s done is done, it is what it is! You can’t go back in time and you can’t change what happened, so let it go, learn from the experience, do things differently the next time and move on.

Although the ultimate solution to get rid of the clutter may be an inside job, it helps to start with the outside. Once you are able to get rid of some of the outside clutter that stresses you out every time you look at it, you will then have room and space to think and begin working on the inside stuff.
